Flying into a mountain airport is often the better trip, and we will tell you when it is even though it is not the booking we get. We drive the Denver end. If Eagle County works for you, we lose the job. That is fine, and it is the only honest way to answer this question.
Here is how the three realistic options compare, and the one date in 2027 that changes the answer entirely for Aspen.
Denver International (DEN)
The most flights, the most competition on fares, and the longest drive. Every major resort is between about 90 minutes and four hours away by road.
Choose DEN when: the fare difference is meaningful, you are traveling with a group whose bags will not fit a small regional aircraft, you want flexibility if weather closes a mountain approach, or your trip includes time in Denver itself.
The catch: the drive is the trip. Keystone is about 93 miles and roughly 90 minutes. Vail is about 118 miles and two hours. Aspen is 220 miles and closer to four hours from the airport. On a Friday afternoon in January, add to all of those.
Eagle County (EGE)
The strongest regional case of anywhere we serve, and it is not close.
EGE is 37 miles from Vail and about 30 minutes from Beaver Creek. Against roughly two hours and two hours fifteen from DEN, that is most of a half-day back across a return trip. It is also about 70 miles and an hour forty from Aspen via Glenwood Springs, which makes it a genuine Aspen fallback.
Choose EGE when: you are going to Vail or Beaver Creek and the fare is within reach. For a short trip especially, the maths is hard to argue with.
The catch: fewer flights, higher fares, and weather diversions are a real possibility in winter. We do not run the local leg from EGE, so you would arrange ground transport at that end.
Aspen/Pitkin County (ASE)
Three miles from downtown Aspen. Nothing else comes close for convenience, and the free RFTA bus connects to Aspen and Snowmass Village.
The catch: it is a high-altitude approach in a valley, and weather diversions are a normal part of winter there rather than an unlucky exception. A diverted flight can put you back in Denver at short notice needing a four-hour drive you had not planned for.
The 2027 date to plan around now
Aspen/Pitkin County Airport closes completely from 11pm on Sunday 4 April 2027 until 7pm on Friday 19 November 2027 for runway reconstruction, along with a new terminal and FBO. Not reduced service. Closed: no commercial flights, no general aviation, no terminal access.
For that entire summer season, every single arrival into Aspen is by road. Private aviation included. If you are planning an Aspen wedding, a summer conference, a Food & Wine trip or anything else in 2027, the ground transport is not a detail to sort out later that year. It is the constraint everything else hangs off, and the operators who serve that route will be booked long before the season starts.
The realistic 2027 summer options are flying into Eagle County and driving down the valley, or flying into Denver and taking the full road trip. Both need booking early.
Steamboat and Hayden (HDN)
Hayden is about 22 miles from Steamboat on US-40. Against 157 miles and roughly three hours from Denver, it is a strong case when the flights work. There is no public bus, so ground transport needs arranging either way.
What we actually do
We are a Denver operator and we drive the Denver end of every trip. Denver International or the Denver metro at one end, your destination at the other, in either direction.
We do not run the short local legs from EGE, ASE or HDN into their own resorts. If you fly regional, you will arrange that separately, and the operators there do it well. What we are useful for is the road trip from Denver, including the one nobody plans for, when a mountain flight is cancelled at 4pm and you are suddenly in the wrong city with a booked house four hours away.
