Vail sits about 118 miles west of Denver along I-70, and the Town of Vail puts the drive from Denver International Airport at roughly two hours. That figure holds on a clear Tuesday. It does not hold at 3pm on a powder Saturday, and the reason is specific to this route: Vail is the one major Colorado ski destination that makes you cross both the Eisenhower tunnel and Vail Pass.

How much is a car service from Denver Airport to Vail?
Rates are quoted per vehicle, not per person. Two people and six people in the same SUV pay the same number. A quote covers the vehicle, the driver, fuel, tolls and standard luggage.
Two things move the price: the season and the vehicle. Winter dates, holiday periods and late-night or pre-dawn departures price above a midweek summer transfer. Christmas week, Presidents Day weekend and spring break book out earliest on this corridor. Send your date, your flight number and your party size, and you get a firm number back in writing before you book.
The comparison most people are actually running: shared shuttle seats from DEN into the Vail Valley generally run somewhere around $60 to $140 per person each way in winter, depending on date and lead time. A party of four is therefore looking at roughly $240 to $560 for that leg, and the van still stops at other properties before yours. A private transfer is one flat per-vehicle price, direct, with cargo space for the gear. At three or four passengers with ski bags, the per-vehicle price is often the cheaper line as well as the shorter trip.
The route from DEN to Vail, and why it is harder than Breckenridge
You take Peña Boulevard out of the airport, cross Denver, and run west on I-70 through the foothills past Idaho Springs and Georgetown.
First comes the Eisenhower-Johnson Memorial Tunnel at roughly mile marker 213. It tops out at 11,158 feet and is the highest point on the entire Interstate Highway System. There is no exit inside it, so once you are in the bore you are committed to the far side.
Then, and this is the part that distinguishes Vail, you keep going. Breckenridge traffic leaves I-70 at Exit 203. Keystone and Silverthorne traffic leaves at Exit 205. Vail traffic stays on the interstate past Frisco and Copper Mountain and climbs Vail Pass, which summits at 10,662 feet, before descending into the valley.
That second climb matters more than the extra miles suggest. Vail Pass is a long, exposed, high-altitude grade that collects snow and wind, and it closes independently of the tunnel. On a bad day the corridor can be open to Silverthorne and shut beyond it. Anyone who tells you Vail is “just a bit further than Breckenridge” has not driven it in February.
Coming down the west side you reach the Vail exits in sequence: West Vail first, then the main Vail Village and Lionshead exit, then East Vail. Your driver will use whichever serves your address rather than dropping everyone at the same place.
One altitude note: you climb from Denver’s 5,280 feet to 11,158 feet at the tunnel, then settle at roughly 8,200 feet in Vail. Drink water, go easy the first night, and expect to feel it for a day.
Where to meet your driver at Denver airport
Pre-arranged black car and limousine pickup at DEN happens on Level 5 of Jeppesen Terminal, Island 2, where there is a limo booth for check-in. East side, doors 505 to 507 and 511 to 513. West side, doors 504 to 506 and 510 to 512.
The mistake almost everyone makes: rideshare picks up on Island 5, reached through the same run of doors. The door number does not tell you where you are standing. The island number does. Your driver is on Island 2.
Your driver can meet you inside the terminal if you arrange it in advance. Airport rules do not allow commercial operators to take bags off the baggage carousel or hand out luggage carts, so we will not promise either. Your driver meets you, walks with you, and loads the vehicle at the curb.
Flying into Eagle County (EGE) instead
Eagle County Regional Airport sits about 35 miles from Vail, and the Town of Vail describes it as roughly a 40-minute drive. Compared with two hours from Denver, that is a meaningful difference, and in winter it also skips both the tunnel and Vail Pass entirely.
The trade-offs are the usual regional-airport ones: a limited seasonal schedule, fewer carriers, fares that can sit well above the same trip into DEN, and weather cancellations that put you back on the Denver plan at short notice.
Our honest guidance: if EGE fares are reasonable for your dates, fly into EGE. One thing to be clear about though, because we would rather say it than have you assume it. We are a Denver operator and we drive the Denver end. We do not run the short local leg from Eagle County Airport up to Vail, so if you fly into EGE you will need to arrange ground transport at that end. What we can do is run you from DEN to Eagle by road, which is what people need when a regional flight falls through. If EGE fares are unreasonable, if there is no useful connection that day, or if you land at DEN too late to connect, the Denver drive is the reliable option and we run it year round.

Give us three numbers at booking: passengers, checked bags, and ski or snowboard bags. Those decide the vehicle, and on this route gear volume is usually what decides it rather than headcount.

Private car, shared shuttle, or rideshare from DEN
Shared shuttle. Cheapest for one or two people. You ride a fixed departure with other passengers and a stop list through the valley, so your arrival depends on where you fall in that list. If your flight is late, you are typically rebooked onto a later run rather than waited for.
Private car. One flat per-vehicle price agreed in advance, a driver assigned to your flight, a vehicle equipped for the corridor, and a direct run to your address. For two or more travelers with gear, this is usually the better value once you run the per-person shuttle maths above.
Where we drop off in Vail and the Vail Valley
We deliver to the door, not to a central stop.
Vail Village. The hotels, lodges and condos around the covered bridge and Gore Creek, plus the properties along Willow Bridge Road and East Meadow Drive. Much of the village core is pedestrian, so we drop at the nearest accessible point and walk you in.
Lionshead. The gondola-side hotels and residences, and the newer development around the Arrabelle area.
West Vail and East Vail. The residential streets, long-stay rentals and private homes at either end of town.

Give us the property name and unit or street address at booking, plus any gate code. Vail addresses are frequently large complexes with several entrances, and naming the building saves ten minutes standing in the cold.
Booking your return trip to the airport
Leave Vail at least 4 to 4.5 hours before your flight. In peak season, and on any winter Sunday, make it 5 hours.
That is a longer buffer than the two-hour drive time suggests, and the reason is the eastbound stack. On winter Sunday afternoons the entire valley heads back to Denver at once, and it queues twice: once climbing Vail Pass and again at the tunnel. Either can add an hour with no warning and no useful alternative route. Then add DEN’s own bag drop and security on a holiday Monday.
Book the return when you book the arrival. Early morning departure slots go first, and a 4am pickup from a Vail Village condo is not something to arrange the night before.
