Parking at Red Rocks is free, and that is the only simple thing about it. You do not choose your lot, the lots open two hours before door time rather than show time, and the part that ruins people’s evening is not getting in. It is getting out.
Here is how show-night parking actually works, taken from the venue’s own published operating rules, plus the parts that never make it onto a sign.
You do not pick your lot. Traffic Control does.
This is the biggest misconception about Red Rocks parking, and it quietly wrecks a lot of plans. Red Rocks states it plainly: Traffic Control will guide you to a parking space after you enter the park. You cannot ask for the Upper North Lot because a friend told you it is the good one. You get whatever is open when you arrive.
Which means arrival time is the only lever you actually control. Everything else about your walk that night was decided by the cars that got there before you.
The venue’s own warning is worth repeating: depending on where you are directed to park, you may have to hike, and they recommend comfortable walking shoes. That is not soft marketing language. The park is built on a hillside, and the lower lots put a genuine uphill climb between your car and the gates, before you have climbed a single row inside the amphitheatre.
Lots open two hours before door time, not show time
Parking lots open for shows two hours before event door time. Door time and show time are different numbers, and door time is the one that governs the lots.
That distinction matters because most people plan backwards from the time printed largest on their ticket. If doors are at 6 and the headliner is billed at 8, the lots opened at 4, and by 6 the closer lots are gone. Door times are set per event, so check your specific show on the Red Rocks calendar rather than assuming a pattern.
Earlier genuinely is better here, and not by a token amount. The gap between arriving as the lots open and arriving an hour before the headliner is the difference between a flat walk and a climb.
Free, in the sense that matters and the sense that does not
Admission and parking are both free at Red Rocks Park, the Amphitheatre, the Visitor Center and the Trading Post. There is no parking charge on a show night and no advance parking pass to buy.
The cost is time, not money. Free parking at a venue with limited road access and a single-direction exit is paid for in the forty minutes you spend in a stationary queue afterwards.
Accessible parking and the accessible shuttle
If you are dropping off someone who needs the accessible shuttle, use the Upper South Lot via Entrance 3 rather than the general drop-off points. If accessibility accommodations are needed for an oversized vehicle, tell Traffic Control staff as you enter the park so arrangements can be made.

Oversized vehicles: the 6 foot 5 rule
Red Rocks defines an oversized vehicle as anything measuring 6 feet 5 inches wide at the front or the back. That definition captures all RVs, buses, party bus limousines, and any vehicle towing a trailer.
Oversized vehicles must park in Lower South Lot 2, and must both drop off and pick up their passengers there. They cannot be left overnight under any circumstances.
This catches party bus groups out constantly. People book the bus imagining a door-to-gate experience and discover that their vehicle is restricted to one specific lot at the bottom of the park, in both directions.
A standard SUV is not an oversized vehicle. Limousines and private cars that fit inside a standard parking space may park in any available lot on a first-come, first-served basis if they want to stay onsite during the event, and limousine drop-off is at the Top Circle Lot or the Upper North Lot at the discretion of Traffic Control staff.
Larger groups have one more option: a vehicle with capacity for at least 24 passengers that is at least 85 percent full can request a reservation for the Upper North Lot. Requests must be made at least 48 hours before the event, are processed first come first served, and are not guaranteed. Articulated and dual-deck buses are not eligible and must use Lower South Lot 2.
Electric vehicle charging
There are four ChargePoint stations in the park, located in the Trading Post parking lot and the Upper North parking lot. Four stations for an amphitheatre that seats thousands, so treat charging as a lucky break rather than part of the plan.
The free in-park shuttles almost nobody mentions
During ingress, complimentary Red Rocks Shuttles run through the park carrying people from the farther lots up to the amphitheatre entrance gates at no charge. Pickup locations are marked with signage. If you get waved into a distant lot, look for that signage before you start walking uphill.
After the show there is limited complimentary shuttle service from the Top Circle Lot and the Trading Post down to the Jurassic Lot. The venue’s own advice, though, is to walk instead: the shuttles have to loop the entire park between runs, and Red Rocks tells patrons to expect delays if they wait for one.
The exit is the real price of free parking
Thousands of people leave at the same moment, onto a small number of park roads with one practical direction of travel. Nothing about the parking layout is designed to empty quickly, and no amount of clever lot selection fixes it, because you did not choose your lot anyway.
Two rules shape the end of the night more than anything else. Vehicle entry to the park ends nightly at 8:30 p.m., or earlier at the discretion of operations staff. After that cut-off, every passenger pickup happens in the Jurassic Lot, which sits just inside Entrance 2 off Highway 93.
So if you are being collected rather than driving yourself, the walk down is part of your evening whether you planned for it or not. The venue’s recommended route to the Jurassic Lot is the Will Call Trail across from the Trading Post, then down Red Rocks Park Road. Worth knowing before you are doing it in the dark in the shoes you picked for the photos.
Two more rules that catch drivers out: idling or circulating through the parking lots and park roads during the performance is not permitted, and drivers are strongly advised not to leave the premises during a show, because spaces are not held for returning vehicles. A driver who slips out for a coffee may not get back in.
Overnight parking and the 10 a.m. rule
If you should not be driving at the end of the night, you can leave the car. What you cannot do is leave it there indefinitely. Vehicles parked incorrectly, or left overnight and not relocated before 10 a.m. the following day, may be ticketed or towed.
Set an alarm. A rideshare back up the hill at nine in the morning is a cheaper outcome than a tow from Morrison.
When it is worth not parking at all
Parking yourself makes sense when there are two of you, it is a weeknight show, nobody minds the walk, and one person is happy not to drink.
It stops making sense when the numbers change. A group of five or six splitting one vehicle. A sell-out on a Friday. Someone in the group who cannot manage an uphill walk in the dark. Anyone arriving straight from DIA with luggage, which is a problem parking does not solve at all.
A private car changes the geometry of the evening rather than just the cost of it. Drop-off for limousines and private cars is the Top Circle Lot, high in the park and close to the gates. A standard SUV fits a standard parking space, so the driver can stay onsite through the show instead of leaving and re-queuing, then meets you in the Jurassic Lot at the end like everyone else, except you are not the ones walking back to a car you parked two hours before doors.
